Harry Hirst Potterfield, 87

Mr. Harry Hirst Potterfield, 87, passed away at home in the care of his loving family on Saturday morning, June 9, 2012. Harry was born March 14, 1925, in Lovettsville, VA; the son of the late Charles Thomas Potterfield and the late Margarite Hirst Potterfield. Harry served his country in the United States Navy for nearly three years during WWII aboard the USS Wingfield DE194, and was a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association.

Harry and his beloved wife of 59 years, Betty, lived in Vienna, VA, where they raised their only daughter Nancy Astorga. While living in Vienna, they faithfully attended Vienna Presbyterian Church where Harry served as a regular usher. Harry worked for Amoco as a territory manager for 35 years.

Harry and Betty moved to Leesburg in 1979, shortly before Harry’s retirement in 1982. He remained active after his retirement befriending many of Loudoun’s children while employed as a county school bus driver for 18 years.

He served his God, family, church and community as a member of the Lions Club for more than 50 years and in 2011 received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from the Lions Foundation to honor his dedicated humanitarian services.

Harry leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Betty; daughter Nancy Astorga and son-in-law Fernando Astorga of Leesburg; and two grandchildren, Alexis Astorga of Fairfax and Miguel Astorga of Leesburg.

Services were held June 13 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg. Interment followed in Hillsboro Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Christian Community Church, 12623 Harpers Ferry Road, Purcellville, VA 20132.
