Several Ashburn Cub Scouts — Pack 997, Bear Den 5, from St. Theresa Parish — toured the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility along Evergreen Mills Road south of Leesburg recently to learn about recycling. The excursion also helped the young Scouts fulfill requirements toward a merit badge.

Scout and student groups regularly visit the landfill to learn about garbage disposal and see facility’s machinery at work. Much of the tour’s lesson focuses on why we recycle and what happens to materials after we send them to the landfill.

Groups interested in touring the landfill can learn more about scheduling a spring visit by calling 703-771-5514.

For more information about the landfill, recycling and household hazardous waste programs, call 703-777-0187 or visit www.loudoun.gov/oswm.
