Ashburn Man Succumbs to Christmas Eve Crash

Three-vehicle accident along Rt. 9 near Creamer Lane claims third life.

An Ashburn man who lost control of his vehicle along Rt. 9 on Christmas Eve has died from injuries sustained in the ensuing accident, which took the lives of two other men. George J. Radston, 58, of Ashburn, succumbed to his injuries at Inova Fairfax Hospital Wednesday, Jan. 12.

Radston was driving eastbound on Rt. 9 in a 2009 Pontiac G6 4-door that investigators say crossed the centerline and struck a westbound 2010 Toyota Prius.

David Doane, a 76-year-old Tennessee man riding the Prius, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he died following the accident. The driver of the Prius, Timothy D. Doane, 49, of Harper’s Ferry, WV, passed away on Jan. 4, 2011. Both Doanes were wearing seatbelts and the side airbags in the Prius deployed, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Pontiac also struck a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, which was behind the Prius. The driver of that vehicle, Lindsay Breece, 22, of Charles Town, WV, and a passenger were treated at the Cornwell Campus of Inova Loudoun Hospital and released. All airbags in the Jetta deployed and both occupants were wearing seatbelts, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

While the airbag in Radston’s vehicle deployed, he was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the Pontiac as it rolled in the crash.

Results of an investigation by members of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit are expected soon. When asked if speed or alcohol were factors, sheriff’s spokesman Vincent DiBenedetto declined to comment until investigators complete their work.
