Ashburn Mom Vies for Another Boxing Belt

Tori ‘Sho Nuff’ Nelson works at Broad Run, has three jobs, not counting boxing.

 

Ashburn’s own Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson takes the ring at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax City Feb. 11 to faces Houston fighter Vashon “Lady V” Living for the Women’s International Boxing Association’s vacant middleweight championship in a 10-round boxing bout.

Nelson (5-0-1), a single mother, works in Loudoun as school bus driver and cafeteria worker at Broad Run High School as well as a waitress IHOP. This past summer in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, Nelson won the World Boxing Council’s (WBC) middleweight championship belt in an upset over Lorissa Rivas. She beat Michelle Garland in her action-packed debut at the Patriot Center in September 2010.

Ashburn residents have the opportunity on Feb. 6 to meet Nelson; she’ll be available for fans from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the All American Steakhouse in Broadlands. According to her Facebook page, she's rated No. 1 in the United States and is a triple Golden Gloves recipient. Check out her YouTube page to see her in action.

Living lost a 10-round decision to Christiana Hammer for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Federation (WBF) middleweight titles in October 2011. An experienced amateur competitor, she had won five bouts in a row prior to the world title fight.

The fight is part of the Jimmy Lange Boxing card. In the main event, World Boxing Union (WBU) champion Jimmy Lange defends his junior middleweight title against Ruben Galvan in a 12-round bout.

A third title will be on the line for during the event when Mike "No Joke" Stewart fights Joe Wyatt for the vacant welterweight belt.

Another local, junior welterweight Todd “White Lightning” Wilson (11-0, 3 KOs), of Fairfax, a former collegiate boxing champion and all-American at Virginia Military Institute, faces Fernando “El Latigo” Basora (8-7-1, 6 KOs) of the Bronx, N.Y. in a six-rounder.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with the first fight scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. All bouts are subject to change.

Tickets, priced at $35, $50, $75, $125, $200, $300 and $500 (plus applicable service charges), will be available for purchase through all Ticketmaster outlets including the Patriot Center box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com/ and via Phonecharge at 703-573-SEAT, 202-397-SEAT and 410-547-SEAT. Nice "The Last Dragon" reference.

Anyways, I've been to a couple of these Jimmy Lange events and always seem to have a blast. Jimmy is a local boxing legend and a pleasure to watch.
