Parts of Ashburn marked for redevelopment present opportunities for firefighters to practice training on a real structures, such as the controlled burn Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company 6 conducted Jan. 29 along Hay Road.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., various drills helped company members hone their skills in many aspects of fighting structure fires.

EMS providers at the drill focused on safety and "rehabilitation skills." Fire departments often experience their greatest activity during extremes of weather, so it is essential that a rehabilitation program function across time, temperature, moisture, humidity, wind direction and availability of natural shelter.

The use and final burning down of the home was donated. The parcel is owned by developer Miller & Smith and is part of a planned construction that has been called Wild Meadow II in the past.

Members of the Leesburg and Arcola fire companies also participated in the burn.
