Loudoun Locals Help Arizona Woman

Ashburn’s Chibis and a consignment sale aim to help defray medical costs.

An Ashburn business and the organizers of a consignment sale have teamed up to help an Arizona family.

In early September, high school science teacher and coach Amy Kiefer Berard, her husband Dan and her 4-week-old baby girl were out on an early morning walk when a car struck them in Tempe, AZ.

Amy endured three skull fractures, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. Baby Gabby and Dan also were hospitalized with significant injuries, including a fractured skull and crushed leg. After several days in the hospital, Dan and Gabby went home and are recovering well, but Amy’s hospital stay lasted than more than a month.

Amy will require 1-2 years of intensive therapy to help with her physical, mental and emotional recovery. She has a long road ahead of her.

Those wishing to help can contribute through two ongoing fundraisers to help pay her family’s medical bills:

  1. Donate gently used baby equipment, children’s toys or baby/toddler’s shoes (shoes must be new or show very little wear) to sell in the Just Between Friends Spring Sale of Loudoun scheduled for April. Visit http://www.loudoun.jbfsale.com to learn more. Some the items sought include pack and plays, strollers, infant carriers (like  Bjorns or Ergos), high chairs, bouncers, exer-saucers or activity centers, ride on toys, little tikes stuff and other similar items.
  2. Purchase a pass for five open play sessions at Chibis Indoor Playground in Ashburn. Passes cost $45 and may be shared between friends. In addition, one pass can be used for multiple children (each child will count as one admission) and use multiple admissions in one day. Chibis will donate $15 from each pass to Amy and her family.

To donate items for the sale, contact Alicia Walsh at alicia.walsh11@gmail.com or 571-328-9996. The drop off location is near Lake Anne Plaza in Reston. A pick up may be arranged for larger items or for multiple-item donations (the pick up area is limited to the Reston, Herndon, Ashburn, Sterling and Fair Lakes areas).
