I am writing regarding your article and beautiful photo, “Local Wineries Participate in Annual Grapehound Wine Tour,” May 11, 2012.
Kudos to Cindy McConnell and to Virginia Greyhound Adoption for its Grapehound Wine Tour, an innovative means of promoting greyhounds’ attributes, and for devoted and tireless work helping this gentle breed transition to well-deserved new lives in loving homes.
The public’s increasing awareness of the cruelty inherent in greyhound racing is contributing to its decline. We cannot fathom our dogs enduring inhumane confinement day in and day out, or facing the risk of injury and death racing around an oval just so people can bet on them. We do not consider our dogs as investments to be valued only as long as they generate a profit. Nor can we imagine not caring for our dogs if they become injured or as they age.
I have adopted beloved ex-racing greyhounds since 1997, and I am a board member of GREY2K USA, the largest national non-profit greyhound protection organization in the United States. For more information, please visit www.grey2kusa.org.
