Ringing In Hope Draws Nearly 1,600 to Brambleton

The Memorial Day race put the spotlight on organizations that serve our nation's military men, women and families.

Nearly 1,600 runners and walkers turned out to show their support for the nation’s military service men and women during the Memorial Day Ringing In Hope Run/Walk at Brambleton Town Center Monday.

Proceeds from the 5K/10K race and 1K walk benefit charitable organizations that help men and women in the military and their families.

Former Washington Redskins wide receiver Darnerien McCants signaled the start of the 5K and 10K races by ringing a large bell that was part of the “Bells of the Fallen,” a traveling display intended to honor American service men and women who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and Operation New Dawn.

As part of the Ringing In Hope tradition, runners crossing the finish line were offered appetizers and food from area businesses. Athletes also had the opportunity to test their endurance and performance on the inflatable Savage Hill brought on behalf of the Special Forces Track Club. Plenty of fun activities were on hand for the kids, including moon bounces, a barrel train ride, pony rides, face painting, children’s art, and more.

The event, which occurs more than once per year, was created to raise awareness and funding for the following participating charities: The Fisher House Foundation, the Wounded Warrior Project, Special Forces Track Club and Operation Gratitude.
