Weather Service: Loudoun Under Flood Warning

Goose Creek expected to surpass flood stage levels, Route 15 may be closed because of Hurricane Sandy.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Goose Creek near Leesburg late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening. Goose Creek marks much of the boundary between Leesburg and Ashburn (photo is from a previous flood).

“Flood Stage” for the creek is 12 feet. Monday morning the creek was at 2 feet, but expected to crest near 18.5 feet by mid-afternoon Tuesday. That’s just short of the 18.9-foot crest during the May 12, 2008 flood.

Residents living in the vicinity should be aware and take precautions. Law enforcement authorities previously warned drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary until the storm passes. Drivers who do pass near the creek should not attempt to drive through water on roadways.

The NWS predicts Route 15 will have to be closed at some point.

The creek will likely fall below flood stage early Wednesday afternoon.
