Furnace Mountain Camp is located seven miles north of Leesburg on Taylorstown Road.
Situated on the Freedom Center’s mostly wooded 100 acre site, Furnace Mountain Camp provides the benefits of being close to Leesburg, yet retaining the primitive quality of camps hours out of the way. The playing fields and lawns are large and lovely and the rustic but fully featured nature of the chapel and lodges give the sense of being out in the wilderness. Having access to three streams and a pristine two-acre pond stocked with fish, five miles of wooded hiking and mountain bike trails, a baseball field and basketball and volleyball courts gives the camp a wide range of outdoor activities for the children during the week.
Furnace Mountain Camp provides an exciting, traditional summer day camp experience for children ages seven to twelve. Every day is packed with fun challenges, hilarious skits and scavenger hunts. Themed sessions provide activities and opportunities to learn about different cultures, history, sciences and people. Kids won’t want to miss the ice cream socials, costume parties and off-beat award ceremonies where everyone is a winner!
The camp’s core is the Outdoor Adventure Program where the children spend time learning about and interacting with nature. Activities include cooking outdoors, practicing survival skills, orienteering with compasses and maps, learning first aid and safety, building outdoor shelters, practicing knots and lashing, taking short hikes and much more! The nature component covers observing and identifying the indigenous animals and plants that inhabit the camp grounds. There are numerous opportunities for creek stomping and critter hunting.
Children are naturally curious and are filled with questions like “why do birds fly?” which often leads to “why can’t people fly?” Specific topics within the physics and chemistry of nature will bring out the budding scientist in every child, and will set them on a path of inquiry, discovery and building knowledge. Children will also benefit from the other component of our outdoor program, which uses a series of events, challenges and games to build problem-solving, teamwork, leadership and responsibility skills. Experienced, trained staff is able to tailor activities for safety, fun and a level of challenge for every age, temperament and experience.
Most kids’ summer “goals” center around having fun with friends. Furnace Mountain Camp is, of course, all about fun, but the hope is that every child comes away with a greater love and appreciation of nature as God created it. The camp's staff aim to accomplish three things through these activities: increase children’s self-confidence and encouragement of others; improve their sense of creativity and problem-solving skills; and teach them to care for and respect nature and each other.
