Over the past decade, obesity has become recognized as a national health threat and a major public health challenge.  According to the CDC, more than one third of U.S. adults—more than 72 million people—and 16% of U.S. children are obese. Since 1980, obesity rates for adults have doubled and rates for children have tripled.  Obesity is a costly condition that can reduce quality of life and increases the risk for many serious chronic diseases including coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, and premature death.
