Girl Scout Coupon Challenge Benefits Food Bank

The local troop learned a lesson in family budgeting through project.

The advisor for Senior Girl Scout Troop 5958 challenged the girls to look through local grocery store circulars and her coupon stash to find the best deals on seven items that the food bank is currently in need of.

The advisor agreed to supply $100 of her money and with their findings, they would buy as much as possible. The Scouts made envelopes for each store (Harris Teeter, Giant, Safeway, Walgreens and CVS) listing the deals and including the coupons. The troop shopped and purchased all the items the girls identified.

The troop used $95.36 to purchase all of the items below which were donated to Loudoun Interfaith Relief:

  • 16 cans of tuna
  • 10 cans of soup
  • 5 bags of pasta
  • 14 cans of chef Boyardee pasta
  • 6 cans of vegetables
  • 15 boxes of cereal
  • 16 juice boxes
  • 4 jugs of apple juice
  • 19 boxes of macaroni and cheese

The total without savings cards and coupons would have been $210.07 – the girls achieved total savings of 114.71!!
