Ashburn Pub Fundraiser Honors Malea Kanoho

Ready for summer? Get an early taste during Ashburn Pub’s annual Beach Party and help a worthy local cause.

The party – from 4 p.m. to close, Saturday, March 2 – will serve as the official launch party and fundraiser kickoff for the Malea Renee Kanoho Foundation.

The Malea Renee Kanoho Foundation aims to provide financial and emotional support to women under 40 battling breast cancer. The Foundation – named to honor an Ashburn mother who lost her battle with the disease – plans to provide grants for out-of-pocket expenses and offer emotional support through a team of volunteers.

“There are many expenses associated with the treatment of cancer that are not covered by insurance,” said Jason Kanoho, founder of the Malea Renee Kanoho Foundation and Malea’s husband. “Our goal is to assist with coverage of medical co-payments, medications, transportation and other expenses for women who cannot afford them.”

Volunteers will offer breast cancer victims and their families whatever support is needed, such as help with childcare, errands, transportation, housework, or just someone to talk to.

Kanoho said he’s attempting to honor his wife’s dying wish to help other young, women battling breast cancer.  Malea, who had six children, died of metastatic breast cancer in October 2012 after a three and half year battle. She was 38.

“Malea’s vision was to give back to those who rallied behind her fight to survive and assist young women in their battle with breast cancer and their struggle to survive,” said Kanoho.

The party at Ashburn Pub features music by Kanoho’s band Island Tyme and DJ Double Down, seafood, frozen drinks, a limbo contest, giveaways, and the Pub’s biggest 50/50 raffle ever.

The Pub’s owners are longtime friends of the Kanoho family.
