Virginia No. 4 Lover of Farmers Markets in U.S.

Rankings in terms of pledges of support place the Commonwealth near the top of the nation in supporting local foods.

How much do you love your local farmers markets? According to initial results of a program running through September, Virginians rank No. 4 in terms of loving their farmers markets.

The I Love My Farmers Market Celebration, which kicked off earlier this month, asks residents to commit to spend at least $10 at local markets. American Farmland Trust hopes to obtain $1 million dollars in pledges through the No Farms No Food campaign, which concludes Sept. 9.

Virginia had been No. 3, and while Georgia ($3,130) has squeaked by, the state is only ahead of the Old Dominion ($3,090) by $40. California ranks No. 1 at $5,480, followed by New York with $4,580 in pledges so far.
