Design Cabinet Presents Architecture and Design Awards

The Loudoun County Design Cabinet, supported by the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development, unveiled the 12 winners of its annual architecture and design competition during the Board of Supervisors meeting Wednesday.

The winners are:

• the Franklin Park Arts Center in Purcellville
• Gum Spring Library in Aldie
• Brambleton Town Center
• the Barns at Hamilton Station Vineyards
• Red Rocks Wilderness Overlook
• Loudoun Country Day School
• The Lakes at Red Rock Covered Bridge
• Loudoun County High School
• Palio Ristorante Italiano
• a historic log cabin in Upperville
• New Ebenezer Church in Bloomfield
• the RagingWire Data Center Campus in Ashburn

“Having an aesthetically pleasing and memorable community contributes to Loudoun’s high quality of life, which is one of the factors executives consider when deciding where to locate their companies,” Economic Development Director Tom Flynn said in a press release.

Loudoun County high school students who participated in the evaluation process with the Design Cabinet selected Loudoun County High School for the annual “Students’ Choice Award.” This year’s student participants were Imani Porter-Clinton, Briar Woods High School; Marisa Ahmed, Broad Run High School; Pallu Karmacharya and Katelyn Smith, Freedom High School; Noah Brown and Joshua E. Smallwood, Heritage High School; Kyle Beard, Loudoun County High School; Sara Denney and Sean Mueller, Loudoun Valley High School; J.C. Panagides, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology; and Jack Scheren, Gerson Stuva and Katarina Przybylowicz, Woodgrove High School. College student participants were Ryan Van Sickel from the University of Virginia and Somayah Allibhai-Mawani from William and Mary.

The Design Cabinet is an all-volunteer group comprised of the following professional architects, planners and engineers: Dave Bowers, Stantec Consulting; Rick Conrath, GTM Architects; Ben Dronsick, Northern Virginia Community College; Alfred Gooden, III, BBG-BBGM; Alan Hansen, DBI Architects, Inc.; Robert Harr, Bohler Engineering; Milton Herd, Herd Planning, Ltd.; John Martin and Kevin VanHise, Kimley Horn and Associates, Inc.; Martha M. Semmes, the Town of Middleburg; Kevin Ruedisueli, Kevin Ruedisueli Architect, Inc.; Mark Thomas, Pennoni Associates, Inc. and Julia Vea, Loudoun County Public Schools.

The Design Awards are selected from public nominations each winter. They will be on display at the Dulles Town Center, the Loudoun County Government Center, and at biz.loudoun.gov.
