The program gets off to an exciting start with the Prelude to Act 1 of Carmen by Georges Bizet.  Afterwards, Maestro McCoy, known for clever surprises in many of his programs, has the entire orchestra exit the stage.

For the next piece, Lucas Richman’s The United Symphony, only the percussion section enters the stage and performs “Toccata for Percussion.”  Next, the brass section enters and plays “Hornpipe for Brass.” This continues until the entire orchestra is back on stage and performing as a single unit.  Richman has written a delightful composition for educating people about the instruments in an orchestra.

The maestro next introduces the basic musical elements of melody, counterpoint and harmony in a charming work by James Beckel—Waltz of the Animals.  These concepts are woven into a story about a little girl and her animal friends who write a birthday song for their good friend, Frederick J. Frog.  While the children (and adults) become engrossed in the story, narrated by Tosia Anne Shall, they are listening to a simple musical theme performed in many different styles including Classical, Impressionistic, Contemporary, Avant Garde, and Jazz.

The concert closes with the famous “Toreador Song” from Bizet’s Carmen.
