The Drama of Swan Lake Comes to Ashburn

Loudoun Ballet Company performs the classic ballet at Stone Bridge HS.

The release of the psychological thriller “Black Swan” may change the way people see the classic ballet “Swan Lake.” The movie portrayed the world of a prima ballerina in the New York City Ballet Company in a most melodramatic way; revealing the main character’s obsession (and subsequent insanity) with mastering the dual roles of the white and black swan.

This Saturday and Sunday, the Loudoun Ballet Company invites you to experience a different take, focusing on the beauty and romance of Swan Lake with performances at Stone Bridge High School.

“Swan Lake is known for its beautiful choreography and phenomenal music,” said Kim Fulham, a member of The Loudoun Ballet Company’s Board of Directors.

A Moscow Ballet master choreographed Tchaikovsky’s well-known work, incorporating character dancing, challenging ballet roles and lots of beautiful costuming.

“We have 27 junior and senior apprentices dancing Swan Lake and every one of them hails from Loudoun County,” Fulham said. “We usually have guest dancers that perform the main roles, however this year we are proud to have cast dancers from our own company.”

On Saturday, Tullia Johnston will perform the role of the white swan and Katherine Nachajski will take on the challenge of the black swan.

However, on Sunday, Allison Perhach will be dancing the dual roles of the white and black swan. Being cast in both of these roles speaks to the volume of talent in the dancer, as it is rare to be cast in both roles.

“Allison being cast as both the white and black swan speaks to her technique and maturity to be able to handle the roles,” Fulham said.

Whether you have seen “Black Swan” or not, most people understand that ballet is an art that dancers pour their hearts into for years. Most start dancing at four or five years old and spend hours a week perfecting their technique.

“Ballet is not an art for the light of heart,” Fulham explained. “It takes real dedication.”

The talent of the Loudoun Ballet Company dancers paired with the exceptional direction of artistic director, Maureen Miller, will be sure to please audiences of all ages. Perhaps influenced by the movie, the costuming and makeup will be very elaborate, adding to the intrigue and beauty of the show.

Some people may assert that ballet lacks excitement, but this show is certain to be entertaining. The characters will bring drama and the battle of good versus evil will be played out on the stage.

In addition, there is something magical about a live performance.

“It takes your breath away,” Fulham said.

What you won’t find in this company, though, is melodrama. Unlike what was portrayed in “Black Swan” the Loudoun Ballet Company engages in healthy competition.

The shows start at 3 p.m. March 19 and at 4 p.m. March 20. To purchase tickets, go to www.loudounballet.org or call 703.771.8074.
