Black History Month at Loudoun County Public Library

This month, the Loudoun County Public Library will honor Black History Month with a series of events at libraries across the county. The events are intended to recognize important African-American people and events. Check out the list below and mark your calendars for the free events.

• Feb. 1-29, Purcellville Library
  Learn to Use Your Library, for ages 7-11. Pick up a guide at the Youth Services Desk and use it to help you discover the resources in your library.
• Feb. 1-29, A.V. Symington Teen Center at Rust Library.
  African-American History Challenge, for ages 12-18. Accept the challenge and test your knowledge to answer the weekly question correctly – for a prize!
• Feb. 6, 11 a.m., Sterling Library
  Read, Listen & Do Storytime, for ages 3-5. An interactive storytime featuring the works of African American authors and illustrators.
• Feb. 6, 4 p.m., Cascades Library
  Can I Have the Story, Please? for ages 4-7. Beloved animal folktales featuring the sneaky trickster.
• Feb. 8, 4 p.m., Ashburn Library
  Picturing America, for ages 8-11. Examine art, learn history, then create your very own masterpiece! Featuring the artwork entitled, Abraham Lincoln by Alexander Gardner and Selma-to-Montgomery March for Voting Rights by James Karales.
• Feb. 11, 2 p.m., Cascades Library
  One Noble Journey: A Box Marked Freedom performed by Mike Wiley, for ages 8 and up. A gripping one-man play from start to finish featuring actor Mike Wiley who becomes Henry “Box” Brown, a slave who sees no alternative but to mail himself to freedom in a small crate.
• Feb. 13-18
  Behind Enemy Lines: Civil War 1863 performed by Ilene Evans, for all ages. Harriet Tubman’s contributions to the Union Army’s efforts are brought to life in this one-woman presentation. Tubman is known for her efforts during the Civil War; leading raids and serving as a nurse, cook, organizer, spy and soldier.

  Shout It Proud! African American Poems for Children, for ages 8-11. Interactive poetry, stories, and art projects highlighting the work of famous African American poets.
