IMAX Comes to Ashburn in 3D

Ashburn’s only movie theater just got a whole lot cooler. , just opened its new IMAX Experience, which aims to make “audiences feel as if they are IN the movie.”

IMAX theaters showcase hit movies that have been digitally re-mastered with enhanced video and sound quality, projecting the films onto slightly curved screens that lean toward the audience. The high-quality images along with IMAX’s proprietary digital surround sound system create the full IMAX Experience. Regal IMAX Theatres also offer IMAX 3D, which just takes the entire concept a significant step forward.

The 3D option is made possible by a combination of IMAX’s 3D projection system – which simultaneously projects two separate images onto the screen – and polarized IMAX 3D glasses. The screen seemingly disappears as the movie envelops the audience.

“Regal’s Fox Stadium 16 is already an extremely popular location drawing moviegoers from all across the region,” state Dick Westerling, an executive with Regal Entertainment Group. “The addition of the IMAX Experience will further enhance the entertainment choices available for our loyal patrons at the theatre.”

Currently, Fox Cinemas is showing Happy Feet Two in 3D: Mumble (Elijah Wood) the penguin, now called the Master of Tap, has an unusual problem: Erik, his son, is reluctant to dance. Erik runs away from home and encounters the Mighty Sven (Hank Azaria) – a penguin who can fly. Poor Mumble can't compete with Erik's unusual new role model. But, when the world is shaken by powerful forces, Erik gets a chance to see his father's true colors as Mumble gathers all creatures great and small to set things right again.

Movies coming soon to IMAX include: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (12/16), Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn in 3D (12/23) and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2/10).
