Inside Raging Wire: Even Data Centers Can Be Upscale

McAuliffe's campaign stops in Ashburn to learn about the data center's high-end offerings.

Ever wonder what goes on inside a data center? Raging Wire’s marketing department offered a peek inside its Ashburn facility, which remains under construction as another campus is planned nearby.

The tour was arranged for gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, the Democrat who will face Ken Cuccinelli this fall.

The company was not making a political statement; Doug Adams, senior vice president of sales and marketing, described Raging Wire as “politically agnostic.”

During the tour, Adams and James Leach, vice president of marketing, showed McAuliffe what makes the company special within the industry, including multiple backups for its various systems.

A data center houses Internet servers for multiple companies and like most services there are economy options and upscale varieties. Adams classified Raging Wire at the very top level.

Among the primary offerings are redundant backup systems for power, security and cooling. Companies such as airlines must ensure that their servers remain up and running at all times. At Raging Wire, power can be supplied by electric grid, generator or backup batteries kept on site. In addition, the cooling system that runs throughout the campus has three water sources: a well, the municipal water supply and gray water provided by the county.
