Whoopsies!' Whoopie Pies Now at Ashburn Farmers Market

One local entrepreneur has been creating a buzz by putting a new twist on an old treat.

At Whoopsies!, the motto is, “Why should cupcakes have all the fun?”

While cupcakes have scored well as the current treat trend, one local entrepreneur is creating a whole lot of whoop-la with whoopie pies, and while whoopie pies have been around for nearly 100 years, many people are just discovering them.

Last November, Berkeley Gunnell, of Aldie, and her mom, Marcia Wiggins, of Cape Elizabeth, ME, started a company called Whoopsies!, and now Ashburn residents can get their hands Whoopsies! pies without leaving the 20147 ZIP code.

What are whoopie pies? They are small cake-like treats with a creamy filling. Generally found in country stores around Maine and Amish country in Pennsylvania – where they are called gobs – Whoopsies!’ whoopie pies are made with a twist.

Whoopsies! are created with gourmet flavors and catchy names that go well beyond the “classic” chocolate with white filling. Some examples:

  • Limoncello: vanilla cakes with limoncello cream filling and a layer of raspberry jam
  • The Smart Blond: a simple white cake with Madagascar vanilla cream
  • The Pumpkin Patch: pumpkin spice cakes with cream cheese filling
  • The Rita: lemon cakes with a tangy lime filling.

The owners are constantly working on new flavors. The latest: Raspberry Shortcake and Cinnamon Toast.

Whoopsies! offers online ordering or the treats can be found at a variety of locations in the area. Baked and sold locally at Mug‘N Muffin in Stone Ridge, the companies whoopie pies can be found at the Red Hook Lobster Truck in DC, Mr. Yogato in Dupont Circle, the Frederick Coffee Company & Café in Frederick, MD, Market Salamander in Middleburg, Forlano’s Market in The Plains and now on Saturdays at the Ashburn Farmers Market. The farmers market, located behind the and restaurants in Pipeline Plaza, remains open through Oct. 29.

“We accept special orders for pick up at the market, and please tell us if you have any special requests for flavors,” Gunnell said. Watch for new fall flavors coming soon, including Pumpkin Patch.

“We are excited for the opportunity to bring Whoopsies! to the Ashburn Farmers Market and look forward to seeing everyone there on Saturday,” Gunnell said.

Whoopsies! even makes “minis” which are perfect bite-sized treats for a party. Whoopsies!’ pies sell for $36 for a dozen, or individually for $3.50. The Classic is the top seller along with the Ultamint, Limoncello and Key Lime. Orders arrive beautifully packaged in a special brown box decorated with a blue and brown polka dot ribbon. So give a whoop for whoopie pies!
