Your Guide to Tree Shopping in Loudoun

Local farms offer cut-your-own or pre-cut Christmas trees for a fun family outing.

Within just a few miles of Ashburn there are many home-grown tree farms for a cut-your-own tree experience. Or if you are tight for time, many farms also offer trees that are already cut, as well as garlands, wreaths and other decorating accessories.

LAYNG’S FLOWER FARM

Open 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m - 5 p.m. Sunday.  Layng’s offers 4-foot to 12-foot pre-cut trees, priced $50 and up; a huge selection of poinsettias (this is their main crop and there are 16 greenhouses full of them); wreaths, mixed greens and noble fir (16”-48” outside diameter), roping, white pine, fraser fir, cedar, boxwood & mixed.  Firepits, slides, cookies and hot chocolate.

DAY STAR FARM

Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays; 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 18. White and Scotch Pine $40, Norway and Blue Spruce $50, Blue Spruce $60. Bow saws, baling, cutting and loading assistance, hot chocolate.

COUNTRY LOVING CHRISTMAS TREES

Open 8 a.m. to dark Friday through Sunday, during the week by appointment. White and Scotch Pine, Norway Spruce. Tabletop trees start at $20, full size from $40 to $70. Wreaths made on-site, picnic area, baling and netting, hot cider and chocolate, homemade treats and farm fresh eggs.   

MILLTOWN CREEK TREE FARMS

Open noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 23. Offers 100 acres of Blue, White and Norway Spruce, Douglas and Concolor Fir trees, Scotch, White and Southwestern Pine trees and tabletops up to 10 feet. The Christmas Shop (Saturday and Sunday only) offers wreaths and roping, handmade ornaments, tree stands, hot cider and gifts for children. The farm supplies saws, tree carts and free baling and twine. No dogs or chainsaws, please. Checks or cash only.

BLUE RIDGE TREE AND BERRY FARM

Open for tree-seekers 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until Dec. 24, or by appointment. Offers Canaan and Concolor Fir and Norway Spruce (7 feet and shorter, $50; over 7 feet, $60). A few Scotch Pines and White Pines ($40) also available. Assistance with baling and loading. Pause for hot chocolate or apple cider at the Dancing Bear Fire Pit.

BADLANDS

Open weekends, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to Dec. 17. Untrimmed White Pine, Norway Spruce and a few Canaan Fir, all trees $30. Saws, loading and free twine – and some cows to commune with.

PRUITT’S LITTLE FARM

Open 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 18, Monday through Thursday by appointment. Scotch Pine up to 12 feet ($50), Norway Spruce up to 9 feet ($60), Blue Spruce up to 8 feet ($70), pre-cut Fraser Fir, 6 to 10 feet ($75). Also offering holiday wreaths, homespun crafts including gold, frankincense and myrrh soaps, most under $10. Checks OK, no credit cards. Dogs (on leash) and families welcome, bow saws and twine provided, tree baling and loading assistance. Gather with friends around antique parlor stove for hot chocolate, peppermint candy canes.

SNICKERS GAP CHRISTMAS TREE FARM

Full service shaking, drilling for stand-straight tree stands, baling, loading, including a wagon ride with your tree back to the parking lot. Also available, wreaths, greenery, tree stands, roping, bows and more.  Open 9 a.m. to dark every Saturday and Sunday; noon to dark, Monday through Friday. Mountain slow grown Douglas Fir, Colorado Blue Spruce and Norway Spruce – 40,000 tress growing with selection up to 10 feet. Cash, checks, Visa and MasterCard.

STONEHAVEN FARM

Owner Kurt Gernerd recommends using these directions, not a GPS: From Purcellville, go south on S. 20th Street. (just past the old town hall, keep to the left where it splits), it becomes Rt. 611/Telegraph Springs Road, go about 1.5 miles and at a three-way intersection go right on Bolyn to the fourth driveway on the right.

Mostly Canaan Fir and some Douglas Fir, Scotch Pine and 10 to 12-foot precut Colorado Blue Spruce. Free rope and tie-down assistance, all trees baled with netting. $60 up to 9 feet; $80 each 9 to 14 feet. Also available: natural organic honey and fresh farm eggs, campfire and candy canes for children. Pets welcome.


MIDDLEBURG CHRISTMAS TREE FARM

This location has a Round Hill address, but don’t let that fool you – it’s a good part of the way south to Middleburg. Open weekends through Dec. 18, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Norway and Blue Spruce, Douglas Fir. Greens, wreaths, baling and shaking, saws, open fire, bring you own picnic, dogs welcome and restrooms available. Spruce and Fir up to 6 feet, $60; taller, $60 plus $10 each additional foot.

TICONDEROGA FARMS, INC.

Open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day through Dec. 24. Virginia, White and Scotch Pine, Red Cedar, Leyland Cypress, Norway Spruce, Fraser Fir (see Web site for pre-ordering and additional information). Hayride to the white pine fields, fire wood bundles, local honey, pinecones, fresh-cut wreath making materials. Ticonderoga also sells trees at a roadside stand at 42759 Braddock Rd. in Chantilly.

LOWELANDS FARM

Open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends through Dec. 11. (Call first that last weekend to check availability). Norway and Colorado Blue Spruce, Douglas, Canaan and Concolor Fir. Christmas shop offers fresh wreaths, pine roping, garlands, handmade ornaments, beeswax candles and Lowelands Farm Fine Foods: honeys, herb vinegars and cider mull. Firewood for sale. Free netting, twine, loading assistance, hot mulled cider and gourmet tastings, hayrides. Pygmy goats, ponies, horses, Scottish Highland cattle and a miniature donkey on duty for petting.
