Loudoun County Democratic Committee Elects New Officers

A difficult task lies ahead for local party after bruising year in supervisor and school board races.

, members of the local party gathered this past weekend at the National Conference Center to choose new during a biannual reorganization meeting.

Evan Macbeth was chosen as chairman of the party, which will look to reverse the recent tide of Republicans elected to office. For starters, however, local Democrats will turn their attention toward the 2012 presidential election as well as races for both houses of Congress.

“I am humbled and honored to have been elected by Loudoun’s Democrats to serve as chair of the LCDC,” Evan Macbeth stated in a press release. “We have an amazing opportunity, and responsibility, to fight for Democratic values and re-energize Loudoun’s Democratic majority to reelect President Obama, elect Governor Tim Kaine to the United States Senate and send Congressman Frank Wolf to a well-deserved retirement.”

While nine of the 11 people elected to state office to represent parts of Loudoun in 2011, just two were Democrats: Sen. Mark Herring (33rd) and Sen. Barbara Favola (31st). However, of bigger concern to the local party may be the results of the races for Loudoun’s Board of Supervisors and School Board. All nine GOP candidates for supervisor/county chairman took office, while six Republican-endorsed school board candidates won. And that’s after the LCDC got its way in terms of redrawing the county’s district lines.

So Macbeth and his fellow elected officers have a hefty task ahead. The full slate of officers elected during the LCDC’s Jan. 7 meeting includes:

More than 200 Loudoun Democrats attended and participated in the reorganization meeting, according to the press release from the party. Herring offered an optimistic view.

“Now is a great time to be a Democrat in Loudoun County,” he said in the press release from the LCDC. “There was positive energy and enthusiasm in the room on Saturday and I am looking forward to working with the new executive committee and membership to grow our party and offer a positive vision for the future of our county, commonwealth and country.”

Leesburg Town Council member Dave Butler said Macbeth was the right choice for the local party.

"Evan will do a fantastic job," Butler said in the release. "I've had the pleasure to work with him and the rest of the executive committee, and I have no doubt that this will be an excellent year for Democrats in Loudoun County."

Also during the meeting, Alfonso Nevarez was elected president of the Loudoun County Chapter of Virginia Young Democrats.
