Loudoun Veterans Day Observance Sunday

Town of Leesburg and Loudoun County will join The George C. Marshall International Center in honoring veterans during the ceremony at Dodona Manor.

Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick, USA (Ret.) will be the keynote speaker during this today's annual Veterans Day observance at Dodona Manor, the restored home of General Marshall located in Leesburg.

Helmick is the former Commanding General of the XVIII Airborne Corps. From February to December 2011, he also served as the Deputy Commanding General for Operations for the United States Forces in Iraq, according to a press release.

Before that, Helmick commanded the Multi-National Security Transition Command in Iraq along with the NATO Training Mission in Iraq from July 3, 2008 to October 7, 2009.

World War II veteran Gayle Dora Bevis Reed will also be in attendance. Reed piloted planes for the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs). 

The American Originals Fife and Drum Corps will perform and members of the Virginia units of the Army Reserve, the National Guard, the Virginia Defense Force, VFW units from across Northern Virginia and the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 227 will also be in attendance.

This event is free and open to the public and start at 2 p.m. Sunday. The event will be followed by free tours of the first floor of the Marshalls’ home for attendees. Military and World War II era vehicles will be on display. 

Parking is available at “The Shops of Dodona Manor” located at 310-312 East Market Street; the Loudoun County Government parking garage at Loudoun and Harrison Streets; or at metered parking in the Town of Leesburg.
