Local, Regional Events Mark the 10th Anniversary of 9/11

Tributes across Loudoun County, including Ashburn, commemorate the fallen heroes of Sept. 11, 2001.

On the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, places across Loudoun County and the greater D.C. area are paying tribute and honor to the fallen heroes.

Events Commemorating 9/11 in Loudoun County:

On Saturday, in Ashburn will dedicate a special memorial garden honoring victims of 9/11. The school is named for Loudoun County residents Christopher Newton and Dong Lee, who were both on the American Airlines flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon.

Honoring the first responders, the Middleburg United Methodist Church is hosting a service and a barbeque luncheon for all first responders in the community and their families. Loudoun County Supervisor Jim Burton (I-Blue Ridge) will assist in the presentation of certificates to the honorees. This event is open to the public. Any person who plans to attend, outside of first responders, is asked to make a small donation to the church. Please RSVP to the Church office at 540-687-6492.

Starting at 8:46 a.m., when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, the Lovettsville Mayor Elaine Walker will ring the bells of the St. James United Church of Christ to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. She will ring the bell at 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m. and 10:03 a.m.--times coinciding with the next plane crash at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. Following this, St. James is hosting an interfaith service focused on remembrance, compassion and commitment to renewing the community.

The Town of Leesburg is holding a remembrance ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the Freedom Memorial in Freedom Park. Guest speakers at the ceremony include the Leesburg Police Chief Joseph Price and Deputy Fire Chief Randy Shank and Mayor Kristen Umstattd. The Town of Leesburg is also asking residents to observe “National Day of Service and Remembrance” by donating time or goods, volunteering or by offering a helping hand during this day.

The Town of Purcellville is holding a remembrance program and monument dedication at 6 p.m. at Bush Tabernacle at Fireman’s Field. The monument to be dedicated is in honor of the first responders that served the community. It includes a piece of steel from one of the World Trade Center Towers, a piece of stone from near Shaksville, PA and a flag that flew over the Pentagon.

St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, United Methodist Church, Beth Chaverim Synagogue and Goose Creek Friends Meeting are hosting an Interfaith Prayer Vigil for the 10th anniversary of the September 11th tragedy.

Composed of volunteers from local Loudoun churches and area musicians, a 50-voice choir and brass ensemble, will lead a 9/11 remembrance service at 5 p.m. at St. James’ Episcopal Church.

In combination with ACT! for America NOVA Chapter, Our Savior's Way Lutheran Church is hosting a National Day of Service and Remembrance of 9/11 Anniversary Commemoration ceremony with featured speaker, Julian Dobbs, an internationally known humanitarian and the author of "What Christians Need to Know, The Challenge of a Resurgent Islam".

A statewide traveling exhibit symbolizing Virginia soldiers and Iraqi civilians killed in the Iraq War will be on display Sept. 10-11 at Rust Library in Leesburg. Eyes Wide Open is a contemplative display inviting reflection and dialogue about the human cost of war. The exhibit consists of 133 pairs of combat boots, representing every Virginia service man and woman killed in Iraq and 50 pairs of civilian shoes representing Iraqi civilian deaths, which have been estimated to range in the thousands.
