Two Power Outages Impacted Ashburn Monday

Equipment failure caused first incident, while the storm passing through caused the other.

Thousands of Ashburn residents lost power Monday as a result of two unrelated causes: equipment failure and a storm.

“We had a couple of different things in the Ashburn area,” said Le-Ha Anderson, a spokeswoman for Dominion Virginia Power.

In the first, about 5,600 residences lost electricity to their homes when a piece of equipment at the Beaumeade substation that runs underground lines went down. The equipment failure occurred around 5 p.m. and by 8 p.m. power had been restored to all by 300 homes.

“Then we had a lightning storm come through the area,” Anderson said. “The most impacted area was Hamilton.”

Residents started losing electricity around 8 p.m. That incident caused about 10,500 homes to lose power in Warrenton, Prince William County and Loudoun. It’s not clear how many Ashburn residents were impacted, but at least one resident still had no power as of 8 a.m. today.

Anderson said power was restored to all but about 1,800 homes by 6 a.m. Tuesday morning for that incident. She said Dominion might have to access the backyards to repair equipment to finish bringing everyone back on line.
