Cuccinelli, Wolf Call Whitbeck’s Jewish Joke “Inappropriate”

Whitbeck under fire for remarks made during Constitution Day Rally for Cuccinelli in Sterling.

After the Virginia 10th District Republic Committee Chairman John Whitbeck made a Jewish joke about the Last Supper this week, Democrats pounced and top Republicans have called the comments “inappropriate.”

Whitbeck posted the following apology on the committee’s website: “Earlier this week, I made a lighthearted attempt at humor to which some have taken offense.  It was certainly not my intent to offend anyone and I sincerely apologize to those who were.”

Cuccinelli, the Republican gubernatorial candidate for whom the rally was held, said he did not hear the comments and would have disavowed them.

“Obviously, I think it was inappropriate,” Cuccinelli said Wednesday after an appearance in Richmond, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “It’s certainly unfortunate and something if I had heard it at the time, I would have spoken to right there. Certainly not an appropriate thing to carry into the public discussion we’re having.”

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA), who represents the 10th District in Congress, said the comments were “out of character” for Whitbeck.

“I am pleased John has apologized,” Wolf said later Friday afternoon. “His comments were insensitive and inappropriate.”

Prior to Wolf’s comments, 10th District Democratic Committee Chairman Charlie Jackson, Whitbeck’s political counterpart, issued a request for Wolf to weigh in on the issue.

"As someone who professes to be a staunch advocate of human rights, we believe you have a responsibility to disavow anti-Semitic comments by the Republican chair of your own congressional district," Jackson said in the statement from the committee.
