Ron Meyer, a public relations professional who has appeared as a conservative analyst on Fox News, last week announced his candidacy for 33rd Senate District in the Virginia General Assembly.

The seat is currently held by Virginia Attorney General-elect Mark Herring, who faces a recount in attorney general’s race.

Meyer, who also has served as a spokesman for the Young America’s Foundation, said in a statement announcing his campaign that he still holds out hope that Sen. Mark Obenshain will prevail in the attorney general recount.

“I have personally donated time and money toward his recount efforts, and I will continue to support him in any way that I can,” Meyer said. “However, as my grandfather said, ‘be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.’”

Meyer said he’s a “commonsense conservative” who hopes to break the current 20-20 tie in the Virginia Senate by winning Herring’s seat. The lieutenant governor presides over the Senate, and Democrat Ralph Northam was elected to that seat.

“It is critical that Republicans win the majority in the State Senate to continue the progress that has been made in Virginia in recent years,” Meyer said, listing a series of goals including education reform, stopping the expansion of the Affordable Care Act in Virginia and lowering taxes. Meyer said the ACA would take money from transportation and education.

Leesburg attorney and chairman of Virginia’s 10th Congressional District Republican Committee John Whitbeck previously announced his candidacy for the seat.

Democrats have already held a primary and chose Leesburg attorney Jennifer Wexton as their nominee.
