Virginia House of Delegates Election 2013: Results for Loudoun

The polls in Loudoun open at 6 a.m. today. And besides the statewide races, voters will select representatives to the Virginia House of Delegates. Three of the seven races in Loudoun will be of interest to Ashburn residents.

Voters were coming in at a steady pace in the morning. At the Ida Lee Park precinct, 311 people had voted by 9:15 a.m.

"We've had a steady stream stream of voters come in," said precinct chief Uma Marques. "It's been good."

At Harper Park Middle School, more than 500 people had voted by by 9:35 a.m. Roughly 4,600 voters are registered at Harper Park.

"The expectation is about 50 percent," said precinct chief Audrey Wiggins, pointing out that it took about three and half hours. "That's not bad."

One voter posted on Ashburn Patch's Facebook page that it took 30 minutes to vote and she was only the 14th person in line.

"... the computer database had already been down twice and they don't have paper ledgers so you either wait, come back or vote provisional," Carla Scarlett Berman wrote. "It might be a LONG day at the polls."

Loudoun Registrar Judy Brown said there were some problems, but only in limited precincts, and nothing that will impact voting in Loudoun.

"Things are going okay," she said around 7:30 a.m. "We are experiencing some computer problems, although not countywide." 

Brown said election officers were instructed We have instructed to get at least one computer up and running to check in voters while the problems are rectified. 

"We will be around and help them get the laptops networked throughout the day," she said. "This will not impact the election results at all. Just a rough start."

Loudoun Commissioner of the Revenue Robert S. Wertz Jr., who was handing out Republican sample ballots at Stone Bridge early Tuesday, said a low voter turnout could impact the statewide races, despite many pundits predicting a Democratic sweep.

"I think people will be surprised," he said. "Low turnout heavily favors the Republicans."

On the other hand, one Republican candidate in Loudoun said some of his supporters made clear they would support him, but not the statewide candidates.

In the 10th District race, incumbent J. Randy Minchew (R), a Leesburg attorney, faces Democrat Monte A. Johnson, a consultant. The 10th district includes a portion of Ashburn eastern edge.

Incumbent Thomas A. “Tag” Greason (R) faces a challenge from Elizabeth Miller (D), who entered the race as an advocate for women’s rights, in the 32nd District, which includes a considerable portion of Ashburn and parts of Lansdowne.

In the 87th District, which includes parts of southern Ashburn, incumbent David I. Ramadan (R) will go head to head with Democrat John J. Bell.
