Will a Pill Cure Spider Veins?

Spider veins are very difficult to hide when the legs are in full sight.  Many patients come to me wishing they'd had sclerotherapy months prior so their legs could look their best during the summer months. Sclerotherapy is really the "gold standard" when it comes to ridding your legs of the tiny purple or red veins, but I meet many patients who are confused by the many advertisements touting an easy "cure" for spider veins.

One of my Sterling, Virginia patients had seen an ad for pills that "painlessly get rid of spider veins." She purchased a large supply only to find that they were a wasted investment. Not one of her vein clusters changed and she was very discouraged that the ad misrepresented the solution to spider veins.

Spider veins are only a cosmetic problem and pose little, if any, health risk. On occasion, these little veins at the ankle can cause bleeding with minor trauma. Spider veins do not grow into varicose veins, which are a completely separate medical problem often covered by your insurance carrier.
Sclerotherapy is the most effective and least painful method of treating spider veins, even better than laser treatment. The medication is delivered through a tiny needle and very nicely eliminates a wider area of veins than laser blasts. Patients are generally quite surprised about how painless sclerotherapy is, especially if they'd previously had laser treatment.
