One Loudoun Home Buying

This is a blog about our experience of buying a home in One Loudoun. We will update you on the building process as we go thru it. My goal is to teach others what to expect when building a new home.

I just returned from Afghanistan in November and while away, my wife and kids were shopping for a new single family home for us to move into.

We currently own a townhome in the University Center, the home of George Washington Univ. Loudoun Campus. In December and January we didn't do much looking as we were focused on reintegrating as a family and dealing with all the normal issues that come with it. Well at the beginning of Feb. we finally decided to start looking in earnest as we wanted to find something before the spring rush.

We wanted to stay in the Broad Run High School district, so our choices were limited. The realtor would send us daily updates and there were never more than 7-8 homes on the market at any given time and often there were as few as 3-4.

After looking at numerous previously owned homes we started looking at new homes. There are a lot of great new communities out there, but we were limited again by the cost of buying new.

Four years ago I told my wife that we will someday own a home in One Loudoun, so we started focusing on the two different builders they had there. The Camberley homes were very nice, but they seemed to look like monopoly homes as they all looked the same on the block.

When I drove up to the Miller and Smith models I was immediately impressed with the fronts of the house and all the windows. Once inside, these homes were immaculate and just the right size for our family.

Now it was time to win over the wife and kids, but it didn't take long for them to see the benefits of living in a community where you can walk to everything from the grocery store, movie theatre, ampitheatre or a ballpark(maybe).  Well the next step was the buying process and signing the contract.  That is where this story gets fun and I learned a lot about our builder Miller and Smith.  Stay tuned.
