Ashby Ponds Sweethearts Celebrate 64th Wedding Anniversary on Valentine’s Day

Married 64 years ago, the Weisman's, who moved just over two years ago from Tyson's Corner to Ashby Ponds retirement communiy, prepare to celebrate their wedding anniversary on Valentine's Day.

On February 14, 1947, Donald Weisman presented his girlfriend, Mary, with a box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day just before dinner.  Not wanting to spoil her appetite, Mary graciously accepted the gift, but had no intention of eating any chocolates prior to dinner.  After some strong encouragement from Donald, Mary opened the box and saw that one of the chocolates had been replaced with an engagement ring.  Exactly one year later, Donald and Mary wed in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 14, 1948.

Donald and Mary Weisman moved to the Tyson’s Corner area of Virginia nearly 53 years ago when Donald received a position as an entomologist with the Smithsonian Institute.  Donald, who is also a World War II veteran, became passionate about the study of insects in college at Miami University of Ohio and received his master’s in entomology at North Carolina State University.  Mary received nurses training in Ohio; after all of their three children were in school, she worked as a nurse in the ICU unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

In 2010, Donald and Mary moved into the Ashby Ponds retirement community in Ashburn, Virginia.  The two have a shared interest in birding and often travel around the area, including the nearby Algonkian Park, to share in what Mary calls their “restorative” hobby.  At the community, Mary enjoys participating in the line-dancing group, zumba, the book club, the bridge club, and has recently began participating in the adopt-a-grandparent program with Farmwell Station Middle School in Ashburn.
