Local High School Graduates Receive $4,000 Scholarships from Ashby Ponds

Eighteen 2012 high school graduates of Loudoun County public schools will receive $4000 scholarships toward higher education from Ashby Ponds retirement community.

(ASHBURN, VIRGINIA) – At Ashby Ponds retirement community, there are nearly 100 high school students from Loudoun County, as well as Fairfax County, working for the community’s dining services department.  The students work in a variety of capacities including as servers, restaurant assistants, utility workers, and service coaches.  This year, eighteen of those employees, all 2012 Loudoun County high school graduates, are recipients of $4000 scholarships.

Eligibility for scholarships from Ashby Ponds includes working at least 1000 hours during a student’s junior and senior years of high school, having no adverse disciplinary actions on record, having at least a “C” average, and completing all application materials.  The $4000 scholarships awarded to qualified candidates are paid directly to the college or trade school of the student’s choice.

The relationships that develop and grow between the student workers and the residents at the community are extremely meaningful, according to Jason Allred, a scholarship recipient and recent Stone Bridge High School graduate.  “It has become a joy and pleasure to get to know the residents on a more personal level,” said Allred.  “They've become a second family of sorts, a home away from home.”

The Ashby Ponds Scholars Fund has been in place since 2010.  Funds for the scholarships were raised from several community events at Ashby Ponds including the 3rd Annual Duck Derby held in April.  Residents purchased rubber ducks for $5 each and watched as they raced through the community’s indoor pool in return for prizes donated by local businesses and departments at Ashby Ponds.

On Sunday, July 22, the Ashby Ponds community celebrated the 2012 Ashby Ponds Scholars in a ceremony.  The Scholars are:
