Tuscarora DECA Bazaar features Local Crafters and Vendors December 15.

Tuscarora High School’s Holiday Bazaar will benefit School’s DECA Chapter and Juvenile Diabetes Research Organization.

LEESBURG, VA—Over 70 local vendors will sell their wares at the annual Tuscarora Holiday Bazaar this Saturday, December 15 from 9:00 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Tuscarora Bazaar, which is in its third year, has become a holiday tradition at the new high school. The Bazaar is a fund-raiser for both the school’s DECA chapter and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

The bazaar will be held in the school’s gymnasium, and will feature the work of many artisans and other independent vendors. Jewelry, clothing, food, accessories, holiday décor, and other services will be among the items available for holiday gift giving. The bazaar will also feature a booth with families of children who have juvenile diabetes, who will be accepting donations for JDRF, as well as making the community more aware of this illness.

“Our goal is to make the Tuscarora Bazaar a one-stop shopping experience for families looking to buy holiday gifts,” says Tuscarora High School senior and Bazaar co-chair Chanelle Wideman. “By coming to the bazaar we want people to get the perks of holiday shopping, as well as becoming more aware of Juvenile Diabetes.” Co-chair Kelsey Chesser, also a senior, says she’s particularly excited about Leesburg Chiropractic and Massage, who will be giving free chair massages; and, Gypsy Hill, who will be providing samples for over 40 different dips.

“These girls have worked so hard on this project, and they’ve applied the business skills we’ve been talking about in class,” says DECA advisor and Department Chair of Career and Technical Education, Felecia Caruthers. “They’ve really listened to their clients and have made phone calls and visited other craft shows to make sure they get a good variety of vendors. I’m sure that because of them, this year’s Bazaar will be the most successful one yet.”

The school’s DECA chapter will use the money raised by the vendor fees to travel to the National DECA conference in Anaheim, California, where they hope to present the Holiday Bazaar project in the “Learn and Earn” division. DECA is a national organization for high-school students with an interest in business and marketing.

Vendor-donated items will be raffled off to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), a leading charitable supporter of type-1 diabetes research. Each year, more than 15,000 children and 15,000 adults - approximately 80 people per day - are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in the U.S, and the worldwide incidence of Type 1 Diabetes among children under fourteen increases by 3% annually. Type 1 Diabetes presently has no cure, but is treatable through careful monitoring of blood sugar and insulin injections.
