'Tysons Express' bus collision with a construction vehicle this morning, shutting down Dulles Toll Road

Update: Airport Authority Police have charged the driver of the Tysons Express bus that crashed on the Dulles Toll Road this morning.

Spokeswoman Courtney Mickalonis said the driver, 38-year-old Wayne Bowlez of Leesburg, Va., was charged with failure to maintain control.

Spokeswoman Courtney Mickalonis said the bus hit a construction truck designed to minimize the impact of a crash like the one that happened this morning.

"It has a big platform on the back that takes the brunt of the force of the crash, and protects the crews that are working," she said.

None of the 13 people that were injured in the accident were construction workers, she said; all of them were passengers on the bus. Crews working on site, near the overpass on Trap Road, continued to work as police and fire responded to the scene.

The bus' gas leak was contained on site, she said.

It's not clear what charges, if any, will be filed for the incident.

Update 11:15 a.m: More than half of the rescue vehicles appear to be gone, and traffic is moving past the scene of the accident.

Update 10:46 a.m.: Thirteen people were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries after this morning's crash, according to a spokesperson for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

The oil leak that occurred was from the bus, not from the construction vehicle as it was first thought. The crash occurred around 9:03 a.m., he said.

Update 10:11 a.m.: A picture snapped on the road by a Vienna Patch reader shows the bus appears to be a "Tysons Express" bus.

Twitter user @eyezediting was headed Westbound on Dulles Toll Road this morning when she took a photo of the scene.

Update 9:54 a.m.: At least five fire trucks and four rescue vehicles are on the scene of the accident, taking up all but one lane of the non-local lanes on 267 East. Traffic is moving after the Wolftrap exit, but is backed up beyond the Beulah Road overpass. Local lanes are moving more quickly than non-local, which is close to a standstill as rescue vehicles work.

Update, 9:43 a.m.: Ten patients are reported.

Original: Police, fire and medical units are responding to a crash between a Loudoun County Transit commuter bus and a construction vehicle on Dulles Toll Road East that has left multiple passengers injured.

The crash is quarter-mile before the Trap Road exit. Eighty gallons of fuel have leaked from the construction vehicle, which has caused a fire on the road, police say.

Vienna Patch will have updates as the story develops.
