Authorities are investigating the possibility that a shooting death that occurred Thursday night in Sterling was the result of a botched home invasion that left one man dead and another seriously injured.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., deputies from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on the 1200 block of E. Kennedy Drive for a report of a suspicious event. Occupants of the home told deputies that two men broke in and attempted to rob them.

One robber was reportedly shot and remained in the residence, while a second man fled, according to a police report. Seven people were in the home during the invasion and all have been accounted for. One occupant received a bloody nose.

Deputies searched the home and found an adult male suspect with a gunshot wound.

Anthony Devoure Miles, a 28-year-old black male, was transported to Inova Loudoun Hospital in Lansdowne, where he was pronounced dead. Miles lived with family in Manassas, though he had lived off and on in the Sterling area during the past few years.

Loudoun Rescue transported the man to Inova Loudoun Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Another person, believed to be the man who fled the scene, arrived sometime during the night at the same hospital with a gunshot wound. He was transferred to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was initially listed in critical but stable condition. His condition is now being called stable. Investigators located the vehicle used to transport the second man to the hospital, but not the driver. Anyone with information about this individual is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-0445.

The identities of the two men who were shot will not be released until the next-of-kin are notified, which is an ongoing process. Except for the driver, all individuals involved, including witnesses, have been identified.  The case remains under investigation.

The incident is not believed to be gang-related, according to the Sheriff’s Office, but that possibility has not been ruled out.

Without a significant change in the case, the next update likely will not be released until at least  5 p.m.
