IAFC Workers Get Fire, Rescue Demo

The Loudoun County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management showed participants how safety equipment works.

The Loudoun County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management invited members of the International Association of Fire Chiefs to the county's Public Safety Center off Sycolin Road May 11 to learn about the tools of the trade.

The IAFC represents firefighters at the national and international level, so understanding how equipment works and its importantance are keys.

"They want to get as much hands-on experience and understanding of what the business is about," said Loudoun Fire Chief W. Keith Brower Jr. "They need to understand the terminology and how it works. The way we're going to do that is we're going to immerse them."

Brower said he hoped to open the demonstration to the general public in future years, much like many of the local fire stations do once or twice a year. This year, it was limited to IAFC workers and family members of the firefighters.

"It's helpful if the family members know what they're loved ones are getting into," Brower said. "It's a good way to showcase what we do."
