Missing LA Child Found in Sterling

The 6-year-old was located with her mother and soon will be reunited with her father.

A child reported missing from her Los Angeles home by her father in February 2006 has been located in Sterling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Loudoun authorities took Maria E. Cano, 39, into custody April 16 and she remains in custody. Cano was described in a LCSO press release as the mother of the missing child, now 12. According to the release, Cano was suspected of abducting the then-6-year-old child in 2006 and leaving the country.

The Los Angeles Police Department received a tip earlier this month through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children website, www.missingkids.com, that the child was living in Sterling.

The LA police contacted LCSO detectives who were able to identify and locate the child and her mother at a home on West Nettle Tree Road. Cano was taken into custody and authorities are in the process of reuniting the child with her father.

Cano is wanted in California for child concealment and multiple counts of grand theft, according to the press release. She awaits extradition at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
