Ten Loudoun Stores, 4 in Ashburn, Sell to Underage Buyers During Sting

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Community Resource Unit and special agents from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control conducted a joint operation that resulted in charges against clerks at ten Loudoun stores who sold alcohol to underage buyers.

During the March 21 operation, officers visited 40 stores with two underage volunteers in the Dulles South and University Station areas of the county. When the underage volunteer successfully purchased alcohol, a bust was made.

Clerks at the following stores were charged:

Ashburn

Chantilly

• Jimbos - 43112 John Mosby Highway
• Croson’s Store - 42382 John Mosby Highway
• Harris Teeter - 42015 Village Center Plaza, Stone Ridge
• 7-Eleven - 42040 Village Center Plaza, Stone Ridge
• Walgreens - 42025 Village Center Plaza, Stone Ridge

Sterling

• Walgreens - 25421 Eastern Market Plaza

The clerks at each store now face charges of selling alcoholic beverages to an underage person, a Class 1 Misdemeanor. In addition, the stores face penalties from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

On the bright side, 33 stores, or more than 75 percent, did not sell to the underage volunteers to the operation.

“All too often the mix of alcohol and youth can have tragic consequences,” said Loudoun Sheriff Michael L. Chapman, commending stores that obeyed the law.  “We plan to hold more joint operations in the future to discourage the sale of alcohol to underage buyers, particularly with the upcoming prom and graduation season.”
