Coalition Voices Opposition to Proposed Heliport on Egypt Farm

A "Coalition to Keep Western Loudoun Peaceful" has emerged with more than 200 residents who oppose the construction of Loudoun's first residential heliport by JK Moving CEO Chuck Kuhn on Egypt Farm.

JK Moving CEO Chuck Kuhn’s plans to construct a residential heliport on Egypt Farm is being met with opposition from a new coalition concerned that the project will directly impact nearby residents.

“The Coalition to Keep Western Loudoun Peaceful” voices concerns from residents, businesses, and organizations of Western Loudoun who oppose the construction of a heliport in the North Fork area. The coalition alleges Kuhn’s heliport will directly affect the equine industry, viticulture, and historical tourism, according to the group’s Facebook page, which has amassed nearly 200 likes and more than 50 signatures on the group’s petition page.

The group notes Kuhn has requested that takeoffs for the proposed helicopter to extend to 10 p.m. despite current regulations prohibiting takeoffs after 6 p.m. A statement released by members representing the coalition expresses concerns that the heliport will damage property values, take tax dollars from the Loudoun County school system, and contradict North Fork’s “traditional lifestyle.”

“The installation of a helipad will set a dangerous precedent and allow for the construction of further helipads on residential land spoiling the natural beauty and quiet of Loudoun County,” said Dorothy Beach, a local organizer involved with the Coalition, in a statement. “The heliport and helicopter present a danger to our livestock. Our small volunteer fire department isn’t equipped to assist in an emergency.”

Kuhn has previously stated that his helicopter, a Eurocopter EC130, uses decibel killing sound reduction technologies. The coalition alleges Kuhn’s helicopter is “louder than a 65 mph interstate or a 737 in a landing pattern.”

The Loudoun Board of Supervisors has not issued an official response to the coalition but plans to discuss the special permission zoning in September.
