Costco Shooting Deemed Justifiable, Sheriff's Office Open Again and Buy Goods at County Auction

Here are five things to know this week about government in Loudoun County.

1. A Commonwealth’s Attorney released a report last week on the May 29 shooting of Mhai Scott, 38, at the Costco in Sterling. The report concludes that the Loudoun County Sheriff Office deputy who shot Scott acted in self-defense and that the use of deadly force was justifiable.

“The Deputy’s actions constitute justifiable homicide as the killing was a reasonable use of lethal force and was undertaken in self-defense and in defense of others,” the report reads.

2. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Administrative Office, which closed last week, reopened today, Wednesday, Aug. 7 at its new location on 803 Sycolin Road in Leesburg.

3. Loudoun County is selling a variety of goods in a surplus auction, including a piano, a John Deere utility vehicle, office furniture and more. The auction closes at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013. Find more information about the auction and registration at Loudoun County’s website.

4. State Sen. Mark Herring (D-Loudoun), Virginia’s Democratic candidate for attorney general, will unveil his plan for ethics reform Wednesday, in light of the gift scandal surrounding Gov. Bob McDonnell.

If elected attorney general, Herring will “work with the General Assembly to strengthen and introduce measures that prevent corruption, hold elected officials accountable and work to restore public trust,” according to a release from his campaign. 

5. E.W. Jackson, Virginia’s Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, is drawing criticism for saying the Democratic Party is “anti-God.”
