Crews Begin Survey Work for Silver Line Along Greenway

While construction will not begin in earnest until sometime next year, much preliminary work is underway on the second phase of Metro’s Silver Line, which will extend the line from Wiehle Avenue in Reston to Dulles Airport and Ashburn.

Anyone driving along the Dulles Greenway may have seen Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project Phase 2 crews out this week as they expanded their survey and geotechnical testing work onto the Greenway in Loudoun County this week, according to project representatives.

Capital Rail Constructors’ (CRC) crews, which have already been visible at Dulles Airport and on the Dulles Access Highway and Toll Road, now will begin using survey equipment, utility locator vacuum trucks and geotechnical boring drill rigs in the median and along the shoulders of the Greenway.

Some work may require lane closures, which will be announced in advance. Drivers are asked to obey work signs marking the area.

The first phase is expected to be complete later this year, with riders boarding sometime early in 2014. The Silver Line connect with the rest of the Metro train system at East Falls Church.

The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, part of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is overseeing the work, which is being done by contractor CRC.
