Loudoun Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event — Harmony Middle School

Loudoun County offers eight collection events a year for residents to dispose of materials from their homes such as left over chemicals, fuels, mercury thermometers, pesticides and other potentially hazardous substances that should not be included with regular household garbage.

Typical household hazardous wastes that will be accepted include items such as:

  • fluorescent bulbs
  • household batteries
  • oil-based paints/stains/varnishes, paint thinners
  • metal polishes
  • wood preservatives
  • furniture polish
  • waxes
  • bathroom, kitchen and oven cleaners
  • pool chemicals
  • old fuels, including gas/oil mixes, kerosene and diesel fuel


Latex or water-based paints are not a hazardous waste and can be dried or solidified and disposed of in your household garbage. Other items NOT accepted at the events include:

  • ammunition or explosives
  • radioactive materials
  • pharmaceuticals/medications
  • hypodermic needles
  • household electronics such as computers and televisions

Motor oil, antifreeze, automotive/lead acid batteries, and propane tanks are not accepted at HHW events, but are accepted for recycling at the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility at 21101 Evergreen Mills Road, Leesburg.

The Household Hazardous Waste Program is operated by the Loudoun County Department of Construction and Waste Management. The collection events are available to Loudoun County residents only.
