LTE: Willing to Pay for Metro

A reader in college hopes to live and work in Loudoun and thinks rail will help.

As a college student looking to start my career soon, the future of Loudoun County is very important to me. Loudoun is my home. I am a voter and a citizen of this county. I've grown up here and I have watched Loudoun grow. As I get older I want to continue to live and work in the area and contribute to our local economy.

The Metro would bring business to the area that could make all the difference in my finding a job. It would also mean better access to work in DC. I know several people who hold government jobs and battle DC traffic every morning. It is stressful and has affected both their physical and mental health. Public transportation could help alleviate a lot of their daily stress. Some critics of the Metro question whether or not it will be used. I know that it will. The commuters I know are practically begging for a better way.

This is a great opportunity for economic growth in Loudoun County. Lowering the unemployment rate by creating jobs is something that you just can't put a price on. The Metro would do a lot of good, not just for the people living and working here now, but also for the next generation of Loudouners. The Metro will get cars off of congested roads. Getting even a few cars out of commuter traffic will have a positive impact on our environment. Let's clean up our air a little bit by taking full advantage of public transportation. I want to know that future Loudouners will have every opportunity available to them, as well as a clean, safe place to live.

Some people argue that the Metro is just too costly. And while a lot of numbers are still up in the air and no one knows for sure what the financial impact will be, I am willing to deal with the increase in taxes to see this change. I am not too young to know the value of a dollar or the value of a hard day’s work. I am putting myself through school, often working as many as three jobs to keep up with my bills. At the same time I am maintaining honors standard grades. I know all of this hard work will pay off in the end when the time comes for me to enter my field. I have faith in my abilities, just as I have faith in the Metro.

I am abroderick and I welcome the Metro to Loudoun County.
