Roundabout Re-Route Begins Tuesday at Gilbert’s Corner

The changes to the intersection are aimed at improving safety by reducing approach lanes.

Changes are coming to work done just a few years ago to improve safety and the flow of traffic at Gilbert Corner, where route 15 and 50 cross in Loudoun County.

An increase in crashes at the intersection caused by speeding has prompted the changes, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. There was another accident Friday afternoon at the intersection.

The existing two-lane approaches to the roundabout from Route 15 will be reduced to one lane, leaving one-lane approaches from each direction.

“The adjustments will increase the amount of curvature in the roadways leading into the roundabout, making it more difficult for motorists to speed and simpler to navigate,” according to a VDOT press release.

The work begins Tuesday Oct. 8 and will take place each day between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and is expected to be finished by Thanksgiving. Drivers should watch for flag crews directing traffic.
