Virginia Elections 2013: McAuliffe Still Raising More Money than Cuccinelli

McAuliffe raised $1.9 million in June compared to Cuccinelli's $1.1 million.

Democratic gubernatorial candidateTerry McAuliffe continues to raise more money than his Republican opponent, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

McAuliffe, former chair of the Democratic Party and a veteran fundraiser, raised more than $1.9 million from more than 5,000 donors from May 30 to June 30, according to reports released by his campaign.

Cuccinelli was able to raise $1.1 million from more than 3,700 donors from June 1 to June 30, according to his campaign.

That’s a sizeable gap, but not as big as the advantage McAuliffe has in cash on hand. McAuliffe reported a total of $6 million in cash in his war chest, more than double Cuccinelli’s $2.7 million.

According to the Virginia Public Access Project, McAuliffe brought in approximately $584,000 more than he spent during the month of June. Comparatively, Cuccinelli spent more than $90,000 more than what his campaign raised in the same period.

According to McAuliffe’s campaign, nearly 80 percent of his contributors were from within the Commonwealth, and 88 percent gave small donations of $100 or less.

About $860,000, or 79 percent, of Cuccinelli’s fundraising total for the period was from donations of more than $100.

“Terry is grateful to the thousands of Virginians who have joined in support of his campaign and the leaders from both parties who have endorsed him for governor,” said McAuliffe press secretary Josh Schwerin in a statement. “It’s clear that Virginians want a governor like Terry McAuliffe who will focus on mainstream ideas to strengthen and diversify the economy, and not someone who puts his own extreme social agenda first even if its not in the best interest of Virginia.”

Cuccinelli’s campaign also released a statement thanking Virginians and addressing a string of attack ads McAuliffe and the Democrats have rolled out in the last few days.

“The great support we had this month proves Ken Cuccinelli’s positive message of growing the economy, creating jobs and easing the regulatory burdens on middle-class families is resonating in Virginia,” said Cuccinelli Campaign Manager Dave Rexrode in a statement. “While Ken unveils detailed policy proposals to help Virginians succeed, Terry McAuliffe is running a negative campaign lacking in substance and relying on scare tactics.”

Virginians can expect to see more money pour into the November election from across the nation.
