Virginians to Receive $9 Million in Insurance Refunds under Obamacare

Nearly 104,000 consumers in Virginia should expect to receive $9 million in refunds from insurance companies.

Nearly $9 million in insurance refunds will be made available to 104,000 Virginia consumers thanks to the Affordable Care Act, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell announced Thursday.

Refunds will average $148 per family, Burwell said. Virginia families entitled to a refund should receive the money through a check in the mail or a reduction in future premiums.

A provision of the Affordable Care Act requires insurance companies to issue refunds if they spend "excessive amounts" on red tape and bonuses for executives, the Associated Press reports.
