Cooperative Preschool: New Name, Same Purpose

Community-minded, family focused school, formerly called Winnie the Pooh Preschool, has taught children in Loudoun for 43 years.

As the only parent co-op program in Loudoun County, the Cooperative Preschool of Loudoun has been teaching Loudoun County’s children since 1969.

“We are Loudoun’s best kept secret. We do a wonderful job educating kids and families, but we are unique, being the only co-op in Loudoun,” said Kerin Webb, a teacher at the preschool.

The school, which recently changed its name from Winnie the Pooh Preschool, started in Sterling Park. It then moved to Ashburn Presbyterian Church for a number of years, before landing at Mt. Hope Baptist Church, its current location, for the past 11 years.

The co-op program is different from other preschools in that parents must teach in the class on a rotating basis.

The rotation allows the school to charge lower tuition rates, making the school a more economical choice for many families, Webb said.

“Research and data show the positive impact of parents being involved in the classroom, including the parent-child bond and attitude toward their education,” Webb said.

The parents help take ownership of the school, including maintenance, budget and curriculum. They elect a president, vice president and treasurer each year.

Programs are designed for ages 2½ to 5. Parents can choose either the morning or afternoon session as well as the number of days per week their children attend.

The community-minded school works on several local charity programs, including one they call “Kids Helping Kids.” This year the students made Valentines for kids at Inova Loudoun Hospital.

"We are also working with the Loudoun County Animal Shelter to collect towels, sheets and other items that the shelter needs,” Webb said. “In turn, the shelter comes to our school to teach the children about animal safety, including domestic and wildlife animals. We have a strong community helpers unit and we are big supporters of giving back locally.”

The nonprofit Cooperative Preschool of Loudoun is fully licensed and accredited by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Visit the schools website at www.cplkids.org.
