FBLA Awards Given, Officers Elected for Region

More than 200 students, teacher-advisers and guests attended the Shenandoah Region association of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Spring Regional Conference and Awards Ceremony March 16 at Broad Run High School, home to Regional President Zachary Kerns (Class of 2013) and Regional Adviser Christine Good.

Participating high schools from Loudoun included Briar Woods, Broad Run, Freedom, Heritage, Loudoun County, Park View, Potomac Falls, Stone Bridge and Woodgrove.

The Loudoun County High School JROTC participated in a presentation of colors and the Broad Run High School Choral Department sang the national anthem during the conference, which included a motivational workshop with keynote speaker Crystal L. Jackson, who founded The No Quit Zone, business-related competitive events, lunch from Jersey Mike’s Subs and the presentation of awards. More than 20 local business professionals served as judges for the competitive events, which included presentations, interviews and role-play scenarios in Business Ethics, Client Service, Emerging Business Issues, Future Business Leader, Impromptu Speaking, Job Interview and Public Speaking. 

Other competitive events including subject tests, computer skills tests, projects and reports are judged in advance of the conference. First, second and third place regional winners are recognized on stage at the ceremony and awarded with medals. LCPS students earned 22 first-place, 28 second-place, and 20 third-place awards.

Forty-four of the 73 LCPS winners qualified to advance for competition at the Virginia FBLA State Leadership Conference, which will be held this April in Reston, Virginia. Additionally, three LCPS students were selected to interview at the State Leadership Conference for one of the six annual $1,000 college scholarship awards sponsored by the Virginia FBLA Foundation Inc.  Winners from schools in Clarke County, Page County, Rockingham County, Shenandoah County, Staunton City, and Winchester City were also recognized.

Regional officers for 2013 – 2014 were elected Saturday as well, including Gabrielle Boyles (Stone Bridge Class of 2015), who will serve as president of the Shenandoah Region; Serage Gerrbi (Broad Run Class of 2014) as vice president; and Taylor Tsacoumis (Stone Bridge Class of 2016) as parliamentarian.
