Loudoun Law Enforcement, Schools Perform Safety Training

The exercise at Loudoun Valley HS in Purcellville was intended to help officers prepare for emergency situations.

Loudoun County conducted a safety training exercise at Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville Monday morning that simulated a situation involving an armed intruder at the school.

During the event, which last from about 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., public access was restricted at the school. Students were off for the day, while teachers were back for a work day following spring break.

This exercise focused on the decision-making and coordination processes associated with responding to an armed intruder. The staff of Loudoun Valley High School has volunteered to participate because of the importance it places on school security.

By conducting such exercises, participants hope to test current policies, practices and procedures, while educating those involved, and clarifying roles and responsibilities. The exercise also develops individual performance, reinforces strengths and identifies opportunities for improvement.

Participants in the exercise included the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Loudoun County Public Schools, Loudoun County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management, the Town of Leesburg Police Department, the Town of Purcellville Police Department, the Town of Middleburg Police Department and the Virginia State Police.
